The Noun
1. A NOUN is a word used as the name of a person, place, or thing.
2. A NOUN generally stands as the subject or the object of a verb (There can be a pronoun as a subject or object of a verb).
3. Sometimes A NOUN conveys a feeling that we cannot see, but feel it. We cannot show it.
4. A NOUN has a gender, number, and case.
KIND OF NOUNS
1. A Common Noun: It is a name given in common to every person or thing of the same class or kind;
e.g.: a girl, a boy, a brother, a sister, a table, a chair, a slate, a woman, a man. Now look at its use:
(a) Mohan is a boy.
(b) Suresh is the son of Mr. Shah.
(c) Meena is the daughter of Lataben.
(d) This is a tough wall.
(e) He has no chairs in his house.
2. A Proper Noun: It is the name of some particular person or place;
e.g.: Amitabh, Hrithik, Akshay, France, India, The Nile, The Sabarmati, The Himalayas, The Geeta, Now look at its use :
(a) Amitabh is a great actor.
(b) The Himalayas protect India.
(c) India is proud of Kalidas.
(d) Gandhiji showed us a new way of life.
(e) The Nile is the life-line of Egypt.
(f) The Geeta is a religious book.
3. A Collective Noun: It is the name of a number or collection of persons or thing taken together and spoken as of one whole:
e.g.: Crowd of people, Bunch of Keys, A fleet of Sheep, A team, Mob, Flock, herd, army, jury, family, nation, furniture, hosiery, jewelry, transport, grain, food, flora, fauna, forest, scenery, baggage, cutlery.
(a) Do not travel with much luggage.
(b) We saw the army in the evening.
(c) He deals in Stationary.
(d) Look! How beautiful is the scenery?
(e) This is a hardware store.
(f) He has a very big Family.
(g) The Indian Fleet is powerful.
4. An Abstract Noun: It is usually the name of quality, action or state considered apart from the object to which it belongs;
e.g.: Honesty, Childhood, goodness, sleep, darkness, pity, grammar, music, poetry, youth, age, laughter, smile, theft, agency, service. Now look at its use :
(a) This is the department time of the Gujarat Mail.
(b) There is no vacancy for new persons in our department.
(c) She always gives a sweet smile.
(d) Honesty is the best policy.
(e) Have sympathy for old people.
(f) He has the habit of walking in sleep.
5. A Material Noun: It is a noun that denotes substances. Generally, in new grammar, this kind is not mentioned.
e.g.: petrol, oil, zinc, calcium, ghee, cheese, rice, copper, iron, brass, mercury, milk, phosphorus, etc. Now look at its use:
(a) Cheese is wholesome food.
(b) We get butter, ghee, curd, etc from milk.
(c) Calcium and Phosphorus are elements.
(d) Platinum is the costliest metal.
(e) Iron is the most useful metal.
(f) People are not using brass utensils now.
