4. Input-Output Devices

• Input-Output Devices :

   In Computer, the user issues the commands or instructions through the input device and gets the output or results on an output device. The following table shows the list of various input and output devices along with their functions :

Type Of Device

   Input Devices

   1. Keyboard: It accepts commands in various forms like text, numbers from the user.

   2. Mouse: Mouse works on the principle of point-and-draw. It works with the action of a click or by moving. Used with GUI.

   3. Trackball: Trackball works on the principle of point-and-draw. It works with the action of a click or by moving. Used in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) or Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) area.

   4. Joystick: Joystick is used by the user by moving a spherical ball attached by the stick with hand. Mostly used in video games, flight simulators, and remote control of industrial robots.

   5. Electronic Pen: It is used to point directly on the screen to select from the move or icons on the screen.

   6. Touch Screen: It enables a user to choose from available options by touching the required icon or menu from the screen. Generally used in Information Kiosks.

   7. Image Scanner: It translates paper documents into an electronic format that can be used on a computer. Used for Scanning Images and pictures.

   8. Bar Code Reader: Bar Code Readers are used for reading bar-code data which is in form of alphanumeric data with the combination of adjacent vertical lines.

Output Devices

   1. Monitor / VDU (Visual Display Unit): Monitor is a screen where users can see the results of the instructions given by the input device.

   2. Printers: Printers are used to get the hardcopy of the data which is stored in the computer.

   3. Speaker: Through Speakers, one can hear the voice or sound of audio CD's or music.
