Basics Knowledge Of Computer for Competitive Examination (Classification of computers)

  • Classification of computers

Basically, there are four categories of computers:

    1.super computer   2. Mainframe

    3.Minicomputer      4. Microcomputer

1.super computer: supercomputer is the most powerful and sophisticated computer users these days. These computers are used specifically for scientific research that is mathematically intensive such as in aerospace, satellites, chemical, electronics, petroleum, and nuclear power industries. It is extensively used in weather forecasting multiprocessing feature enable supercomputer to perform many operations simultaneously .ibm, silicon graphics, cray research corporation, Fuji and Intel, thinking machine are market and r & d leaders of supercomputers.

2.mainframes: mainframe computers are large and expensive computers designed to meet the need of large organizations where many people frequently access the information at the same time from one or more databases. Their computer supports the concept of multiprogramming where many tasks are processed concurrently for multiple users.

3. Minicomputer: mini-computer is smaller than mainframes but big enough to cater to a medium-sized organization or a small scale business. the main manufacture of minicomputers is Dec, data general, IBM, and Hewlett Packard.

4. Microcomputer: microcomputers are designed to meet the need of an individual and thus called a personal computer. Their computers could be desktops or laptops or even notebooks.

Notes: Embedded computers are special purpose and are used to perform control functions. for example, purpose and are used in microwave ovens, washing machines, automobiles, etc.

Characteristics of computers :

Main characteristics  of the computer area :

1. Speed: computer makes calculations at a very high speed. The speed of a computer is measured in terms of nanoseconds or picoseconds.

2. Accuracy: Generally the results of computers are very accurate because of its error-detecting techniques.

3.Versatility: computers are used in every progression

4. Storage: computers have huge storage capacity where large amounts of data can be stored.

5. Diligence: computers can best be used for monotonous and voluminous work as it does not show the sign of tiredness or lack of concentration.

6.Reliability: results obtained after processing are reliable which can further be used for analysis.

7. Automation: when the user gives any command to execute the instructions, computers automatically finish it with any human intervention.
